Q. What is a MedSpa, Medispa or an Aesthetic Medicine Center?
A. These are all interchangeable terms that describe practices that offer medically supervised beauty treatments, products and procedures. In most states, the practice must be owned and operated by a physician otherwise; the state medical board views this as practicing medicine without a license. Make sure that you know the laws in your state and chose a facility that is in compliance with state law.
FreshSkin is owned and operated by Dr. Josie Tenore M.D. and is in full compliance with the laws of the state of Illinois.
Q. I want to look better, how do I know what I procedure I really need?
A. Our skin is as individual as we are, telling the story of both our genetics and our life journey. As such, it is impossible to state that each and every person should have the same group of products and procedures. At FreshSkin we believe in creating a customized program for every client and this begins with an objective series of photographs documenting the health of your skin. We then use this information to create a program that specifically addresses your concerns.
Q. How do I get rid of age spots?
A. Our skin is as individual as we are, telling the story of both our genetics and our life journey. As such, it is impossible to state that each and every person should have the same group of products and procedures. At FreshSkin we believe in creating a customized program for every client and this begins with an objective series of photographs documenting the health of your skin. We then use this information to create a program that specifically addresses your concerns.Hyperpigmentation (or age spots) occurs when the amount of melanin or pigment in the skin increases. This can be a result of stimulation by UV (ultraviolet) light, or skin trauma. Some pigmentation is actually part of a condition called Melasma. This is more complicated in that it involves genetics, hormones, UV light and trauma.Pigmentation can be treated with a variety of methods from skincare products, chemical peels and laser treatments.
Q. My face has fallen, is there anything that I can do?
A. We are born with a lot of fat in our faces, our bones are related to one another in a particular manner, and our skin is thick and healthy. As we age, our bones move around, our fat atrophies and our skin becomes damaged from UV exposure. The breakdown of elastin and collagen is part of the natural aging process. This results in loss of the skin’s youthful plumpness and resilience. In addition, as it ages, skin renews itself at a much slower rate than in childhood. And there are other factors that affect how quickly skin will “bounce back” when it has been touched: weight changes, genetics, and environmental factors (such as UV light and tobacco use).Reversing the sagging process involves a combination of improving the quality of the skin along with replacing some of the volume in the face. We like to work with improving the quality of the skin first, as the other treatments simply work better when we do. Microlaser or chemical peels, radiofrequency (Exilis), phototherapy like broad band light (BBL) treatments, and Profractional treatments along with an individualized skin care regimens are used in combination to deliver the best results. Once the skin is healthy, we offer a number of different solutions for facial “sagging” – from a minimally invasive thread lift to several forms of “liquid face lifts”.
Q. Is there anything I can do to minimize my pores?
A. There are many factors that contribute to the size and appearance of pores on the face. Acne prone skin is often associated with large pores in younger individuals. In addition, as we age the amount of collagen and elastin decreases, making skin pores much larger. An optimum result for these common problems involves an individualized program combining products and procedures. At FreshSkin, we have a variety of treatment options to stimulate the growth of collagen and decrease the size of your pores. Again we find that a combination of treatments works best and we typically combine professional skin care products with laser or radiofrequency treatments depending on your skin analysis.
Q. How do I get rid of wrinkles?
A. Nobody likes wrinkles. This is why wrinkle reduction is the most popular treatment offered by FreshSkin. FreshSkin improves your appearance by combining several products and procedures including neurotoxin treatments (Botox¨ and Dysport¨), dermal Fillers, volumizers, laser resurfacing treatments, and customized skin care products to give you the most youthful and healthy looking skin.
Q. How do I get rid of scars?
A. Scars are a result of skin trauma that has penetrated into the dermis. Epidermal injuries typically heal without scarring. The best way to improve the appearance of scars is to improve the appearance of the skin. Our first step is to improve skin health with professional skin care products. There are many treatment options that we use depending on the type of scar. Chemical peels can help soften and decrease the thickness of the scars, we also have a procedure where we take a small sample of your blood and remove the white and red blood cells, and inject the remainder (platelet rich plasma) into the scar to help your body grow new healthier skin. Deep scarring usually involves a series of laser treatments called Profractional treatments, which help to break up the scar and stimulate fresh new collagen and skin. Sun exposure of the scar will give it a more prominent appearance, so we recommend that scarred areas be protected from the sun even more aggressively than other skin.
Q. How do I look younger?
A. A youthful appearance is a combination of youthful bony architecture (the frame), facial fat (the scaffold) and healthy skin (the blanket). As we age, the frame shifts, the scaffold shrinks and the blanket becomes worn and tattered. A more youthful appearance involves addressing each of these individual parts.Unfortunately, we cannot change how the frame shifts without surgical intervention. Some individuals will get bony implants, (most commonly dental) and may get their teeth straightened, but bone loss is not easily changed. That said, there are treatments, like dermal fillers, Sculptra or Artefill that will help to restore the scaffold such that the blanket is better supported. These treatments work best when the blanket is thick and new, rather than old and tattered, so we will stress the importance of improving skin quality and health first.
Q. How long will the procedure take?
A. Procedure length varies on the amount of tissue that we are treating, and whether we need to use anesthetic agents. We always cleanse the skin first, and if topical anesthetic is needed, it is applied after cleansing and left on the skin for 30 minutes before the procedure. The more complicated procedures can take hours, but most procedures vary between 15 and 30 minutes.
Q. How much downtime will I have?
A. The healthier the skin, the less downtime there will be. This includes more aggressive procedures like chemical peels, microlaser peels and Profractional treatments. If you want to have short healing times, then we recommend that you do everything that you can to improve your health, and skin health. At the time of your consultation, we may stress the importance of health both internal and external. If your skin shows signs of severe photo-damage or aging we may recommend that you start on your home skin care program for a minimum of 2 weeks before your procedure. This will help you heal quicker and have less flaking and peeling. Depending on your procedure, we may also recommend that you discontinue certain medications and/or topical products prior to your procedure.
Q. How long will this last?
A. The only things that are permanent are death, aging and taxes. As a general rule, the better you look after your health and skin, the longer these treatments last. If you continue to take care of your skin at home and come in for regular maintenance treatments, you will continue to enjoy beautiful and youthful looking skin. A one-time procedure, even an aggressive procedure like a Profractional or deep laser treatment will not last long if you go out into the sun and not protect the skin from UV light. Even that “I like to have a little color” attitude will shorten the result time for any of these treatments. Combining treatments tends to lengthen the result time. For example, if you use Botox, then the results of your laser treatments will last longer, and vice versa.
Q. How much will this cost?
A. The costs depend on a number of factors; the most important is for us to create the most appropriate cost-effective treatment program. Costs are addressed at the time of your consultation.
