November 2015 – National Diabetes Month, Insulin Resistance and the Aging process.

November is National Diabetes Month (not something I want to be celebrating, mind you). Diabetes is still far too common. It’s arrival is usually a stealthy surprise and the complications can be very serious. Our newsletter this month focuses on early detection of diabetes and what can be done to avoid it in the first place.

As we’ve no doubt mentioned before, as we age the organs in our bodies become less efficient at manufacturing hormones. In some cases, hormone production stops altogether. The same is true for many essential peptides and hormone precursors as well. As a result, our organs may not get all the chemical information they need to function at optimal levels. Or they may get mixed messages that result in dysfunction. One common outcome is a condition called Insulin Resistance (or pre-diabetes), where the organs and muscles become less able to utilize the insulin created in our own pancreas.

Insulin resistance can occur on its own or as part of a complex series of health consequences called Metabolic Syndrome. The ramifications can include unhealthy effects on lipid metabolism or, if left untreated, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. For the past several years, a mainstay of our solution at FreshSkin/FreshEnergy has been to prescribe both Inositol and Alpha Lipoic Acid.

Today, we offer our own exclusive blend of those two ingredients, called Dr Josie Recommends Vivace (pronounced Viv-Ah-Chee). For patients with excess body fat, we also offer some very effective muscle-sparing fat-loss diets. And since recent studies have shown that herbal extracts like Curcumin and Berberine are effective in treating Insulin Resistance, we’ve added those to our repertoire as well.

Periodic or intermittent fasting can also help. It increases insulin sensitivity while improving the balance of leptin and ghrelin hormones that control satiety (feeling full) and hunger, respectively. Intermittent fasting means, on a daily basis, there is a specific time window when it is okay to eat. For example, from noon to 6 pm it may be okay to eat, but not before and after. Such a regimen not only helps to improve the metabolic profile, it also stimulates more growth hormone secretion and reduces inflammation, a culprit in every chronic and age related disease.

Consider adding MCT oil, Alpha Lipoic Acid with Inositol, BergaMet, Berberine and Grape Seed Extract to your diet. MCT oil increases thermogenesis in the body, helping improve both metabolism and fat loss. Inositol, a part of the B-vitamin complex, can improve insulin sensitivity by having an insulin-like effect on metabolic enzymes. Alpha lipoic acid is an antioxidant that plays a key role in cellular metabolism and promoting proper cellular intake of glucose. The combination was found to be especially useful in post-menopausal women at risk for developing breast cancer.

BergaMet, a fruit extract supplement, is shown to block cholesterol production and absorption in the liver, and works directly on the insulin receptors to help reduce risks of diabetes, high blood pressure, and abdominal obesity. Berberine is a plant extract commonly used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, with clinical benefits supporting cardiovascular health, heart rhythm and contraction, optimal lipid metabolism, healthy blood glucose levels and overall liver function. Finally, Grape seed extract is a powerful source of phenolic compounds that support arterial dilation and blood flow.

Dr. Josie L. Tenore, M.D., M.Sc.,
is a board-certified family physician who became interested in aesthetics during medical school. As a result, most of her electives focused on dermatology and plastic surgery. Dr. Josie began her practice with family medicine because she enjoyed the challenge of delivering comprehensive health and well-being to people of all ages.
